How is Māpura Art Studio in Auckland helping their community be creative during COVID-19?

During these unsettling times, Māpura Art Studio in Auckland, an art initiative for people with disabilities and special needs, are getting even more creative and inviting others to join them in raising awareness, while letting their creative juices flow through their Māpura Masks Project.

The aim of the project is to create 'beautiful, fantastical, over the top, simple, bizarre, magical, mythical masks, gloves and/or costumes with whatever medium you like using any materials you can find'.

People with special needs are particularly vulnerable at this time and the folks of Māpura Studio want to show their support by allowing people in the community to be imaginative and creative. Here's what John Ferriss had to say about this project:

“We've started a mask making project and we're encouraging all people, everywhere, to participate - creativity and the arts are very important in uplifting and uniting people. The making of creative, unusual, fantastical masks also acknowledges the need for protection and looking after yourself and others.”
