What is Randwick Park's community-led development approach?

Randwick Park

Location: Randwick Park, Manurewa – Auckland
Population: 6,000 residents

Randwick Park is a small, culturally diverse South Auckland community packed full of 6,000 people, 31% of whom are under the age of 15. The area known as Randwick Park to the community includes both the Randwick Park and Hyperion census area units (CAUs) and is bounded in an area just less than 1km². It is an isolated suburban development that was first subdivided in the mid-1970s and is bordered by the Southern motorway, Papakura Stream, rural Alfriston and more recently, affluent subdivisions. The majority of the Randwick neighbourhood is made up of social housing and rentals, which contrasts to a small north east corner of newer rented and private housing.

Since the death of liquor shop owner Navtej Singh in 2008, people in Randwick have stood up to take back their neighbourhood from gangs and violence, and cultivate positive, meaningful change. As a result residents have taken on community leadership roles. They have a model of neighbourhood-led development that depends on volunteerism and have developed legal entities, associations and trusts. Through these entities Randwick Park has raised money and developed leadership to self-determine and assist sustaining activities and their approach to neighbourhood-led development, creating local employment through social enterprises that has increased the skills and incomes of locals.

The community leaders have focused on what is beautiful and hopeful in Randwick and use their neighbourhood-led development model, where they 'walk alongside' their community and encourage their neighbours to come out of their homes to make Randwick their dream neighbourhood. They have twelve dominant themes: employment, housing, travel, family, children, education, finances, community, wellbeing, transport, retirement and sport which emerged from their local research and analysis. Their aim is to support and encourage the provision of services, information, education and resources for and by the Randwick Park Community. To foster and encourage the development of sports and 'active' activities for Residents in Randwick Park neighbourhood, and beyond.
