Helping New Zealand build strong communities

Community Internship Programme Te Tahua Whakahaerenga Tauira Hapori

Making an application

Note: The Community Internship Programme is not accepting applications at this time.

The host organisation, intern and the home organisation develop a proposal together based on the needs identified by the community organisation. The proposal must clearly show the expected outcomes, the benefits of the internship to all three partners, and the ongoing relationships once the internship is completed.

The host organisation will need to identify its area for development and be clear about what it wants the intern to do during the internship.  For instance, an internship may focus on developing policies and procedures, planning, or developing systems that build the host organisation’s capacity and capability to operate more effectively.

Applications will need to:

  • show a benefit to the host, the home organisation, the intern and the community sector
  • support an ongoing relationship between all parties after the internship has finished
  • provide evidence that there are strong systems in place for the host organisation to manage an internship for a three to six month period
  • have a clear and suitable approach to meeting the internship outcomes
  • have identified a clear development need for the internship
  • include the salary cost (salary and PAYE only) equivalent to the current salary of the intern.

Applications must demonstrate:

  • collaboration and partnership between the host, intern and home organisation
  • capacity building and strengthening of the host organisation
  • sustainability of the outcomes of the internship
  • support for the intern during the internship
  • a plan to re-induct the intern to their home organisation
  • benefits of the internship and opportunities or plans for sharing learning.

A community panel will assess the applications and make funding recommendations to the Department of Internal Affairs.

Frequency of application

Community Internship Programme funding is not open to host organisations and interns who received grants, or participated in CIP funded internships during the previous two financial years.

Employers that have participated as home organisations may participate in consecutive years for new CIP applications involving partnerships with different host organisations and releasing different employees to undertake the community internship/s.

Accountability requirements

Each year a certain number of grant recipients are selected for auditing. Audits are also carried out on grant recipients who do not submit required accountability reports or where other concerns have been raised about how the grant is being, or has been spent

In order to provide assurance that funds are being spent on approved purposes, grant recipients are required to:

  • account for grant spending as a separate entry in their financial accounts
  • complete a final accountability report at the conclusion of the internship

Promoting CIP support

Grant recipients must acknowledge the financial support given by CIP in all relevant publicity material, publications, annual reports  and similar documents.
