Use this checklist to find out if your organisation can apply for Community Internship Programme (CIP) funding.
1. Are you applying for CIP funding on behalf of an organisation?
Yes - go to question 2
No - The CIP does not fund individuals. If you are seeking funding as an individual, go to the checklist for individuals to see if you meet the requirements to apply for funding. You can also check other grant opportunities or the Funding Information Service may be able to assist in finding a fund that is better suited to your purpose.
2. Will your CIP application be a joint proposal between a host organisation, an intern and a home organisation?
Yes - Be aware that the application must be completed by the host organisation, with input from the intern and the home organisation. Go to question 3
No - The CIP application must be a joint proposal between a host organisation, an intern and a home organisation. Go back to your organisation’s members and other partners to discuss this further.
3. Has the following been considered, and can these be shown as part of a CIP application?
- the proposal is developed based on the needs identified by the host organisation
- the proposal clearly shows what will be achieved, the benefits of the internship to all three partners, and how the ongoing relationships will continue once the internship is completed.
Yes - go to question 4
No - your organisation’s application will need to show all these things. Go back to your organisation’s members and the other partners to discuss this further.
4. Can your organisation show the following things, and can they be shown as part of your organisation’s application?
- that you are an established non-profit hapū, iwi or community organisation with legal entity status
- that you have robust governance and management systems. These should include:
- clearly defined roles within the organisation, especially roles that manage and monitor finances
- information about the people who hold senior positions within the organisation and the qualifications or experience they have that help them do their job
- established policies and procedures for the employment, management and health and safety of employees
- that you have appropriate systems for managing and monitoring their finances, including:
- being registered for GST
- having their accounts audited each year

- providing additional information if audited accounts are more than nine months old

Yes - go to question 5
No - The Community Resource Kit provides a range of information, resources and links to assist organisations in meeting these requirements. Go back to your organisation’s members and discuss this further.
5. Does your organisation have all of the following information ready?
- collaboration and partnership between the host, intern and home organisation
- the amount of funding needed for the intern's salary and PAYE (this should be equivalent to the current salary of the intern)
- how the internship will build capacity and strengthen the host organisation
- ongoing benefits of the internship, even after it is completed
- opportunities for sharing knowledge after the internship is completed
- strategies for supporting the intern during the internship
- what the benefits to the community will be
- what will be achieved
- what systems you have in place (as the host organisation) to manage an internship for a three to six month period
- what approach you (as the host organisation) will take to meeting the internship outcomes
- who the partnership organisations are that you (as the host organisation) work with
- why the internship is needed
Yes - It is likely that your organisation meets the core requirements to apply to the CIP. Go to the Community Internship Programme for more information.
No - It is unlikely that an application would be approved if the information noted above is not provided. However, in many cases it is just a case of evaluating what the ‘purpose’ of your organisation’s project is, and providing information to support it. Go back to your organisation’s members and discuss these issues.
