Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust
Can I apply for a grant from the Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust?
Use this checklist to see if you can apply for a grant from the Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust
1. The aims of the Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust are to
- promote the preservation of Chinese New Zealand history, and awareness of the contributions of early Chinese settlers, and,
- provide tangible support for Chinese New Zealand history, language and culture, particularly that of the early settler Chinese community.
Keeping these aims in mind, the Trust promotes (but is not limited to)
- learning and use of the Cantonese language,
- awareness and understanding of the history of Chinese in New Zealand,
- the recording and preserving of Chinese New Zealand history,
- greater public understanding of ethnic diversity with particular emphasis on the contributions of Chinese New Zealanders, and
- Chinese arts and culture (including Chinese New Zealand creative and cultural expression).
Will your project contribute to any of the aims of the Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust?

Can you provide an endorsement from a reputable organisation within the Chinese poll tax descendent community?
Yes - go to question 3

Yes - go to question 4
No - The Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust requires that your proposal and application contain everything in the list above and is not better suited to being funded elsewhere. Please go back to your organisation and discuss refocusing your proposal or getting the necessary permissions before applying.
4. Can you confirm that your proposal is not for servicing a debt, travel or a loan, and that it is unlikely to require ongoing funding from the Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust?
Note: The Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust must prioritise the applications that it receives. This means that, in general:
- applications for servicing debt, travel, or a loan, are unlikely to be considered for a grant
- there is no guarantee of ongoing funding after the initial grant
It is important to consider these priorities before making an application. When thinking about the future of your project, the Chinese Poll Tax Heritage Trust is unlikely to be a permanent stream of funding.
